DIY The imperfectly black perfect platform pumps

Standard

<p><span style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>What’s a girl gotta do to get a great pair of black heels?? I seriously looked high and low to find the perfect platforms. Don’t get me wrong, I found tons of black shoes that had a platform, but none of them were what I was looking for…or they were way outside of my price range which many of you know isn’t very high to begin with.&nbsp;</span></p>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>I wanted something simple. No frills. No sequins, no glitter, and not patent leather. They needed to be comfortable and fit the arch of my foot nicely. They needed to have a decent platform, but not verging on stripper. They needed to be classy but fabulous. OK. So maybe it is a bit of a tall order. But, I went out anyway on the search for the perfect platform pump.</div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>For days I searched. Online. In stores. Stopping other girls on the street to beg them to tell me where they got their perfect pumps. But, alas, It was the day before my Vegas trip and I was empty handed.</div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>On a whim, I ran to Ross to see what I could find. I’d been to the Ross across town and the one nearest to my house already with no luck. But, there was another one and I thought what do I have to lose.&nbsp;</div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>But, still nothing.&nbsp;</div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>Determined…or stubbornly…I walked the racks again. Tried on all the ones that initially caught my eye only to be disappointed with the fit or look of them in those weird mirror/bench thingies.&nbsp;</div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>And, then it clicked. Why don’t I make them? I ran back to the clearance section where I found this great pair of Calvin Klein white satin pumps. White. Satin. Gross. But, I know that cobblers and dress makers dye shoes all the time, so why couldn’t I.</div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>And, off I went with my $13 pair of white, satin Calvin Klein’s and a bottle of RIT dye.&nbsp;</div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”><img class=”posterous_plugin_object posterous_plugin_object_image” src=”http://getfile4.posterous.com/getfile/files.posterous.com/temp-2012-08-12/JHrDCbJjmHzyrFxxhAcmxaGFJEuqnwHIsIcvDxpBtktfzkGlxtIJgeGHqvqc/IMG_8364.jpg.thumb100.jpg?content_part=cirmcIvleIFGffGiIlIa&#8221; alt=”” width=”100” height=”100” /></div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>To tackle this project I simply took an old hand towel and rubbed the dye into the satin in the same direction as the grain of the fabric. Then, for the places the dye couldn’t reach, I grabbed my trusty Sharpie and got into the nooks and crannies.&nbsp;</div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”><img class=”posterous_plugin_object posterous_plugin_object_image” src=”http://getfile2.posterous.com/getfile/files.posterous.com/temp-2012-08-12/quqCFdJlffputimrHnljHEuBJAwJBByCkhGeGBFqkajAqeyEusAmbFIaJvBy/IMG_8365.jpg.thumb100.jpg?content_part=qnvukjBICepAlxIDuuFk&#8221; alt=”” width=”100” height=”100” /></div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>In all honesty, it isn’t a perfect black. After the first coat, it was more of a purple black. After the second it was more of a brown black. I’d heard of this little mystery before—-not being able to dye anything a true black. But, after they dried, it was close enough to a true black that I didn’t really care. I mean, they’re comfy, with the perfect platform, and only cost me a meager $13!&nbsp;</div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”><img class=”posterous_plugin_object posterous_plugin_object_gallery” src=”http://getfile5.posterous.com/getfile/files.posterous.com/temp-2012-08-12/suJwskzwADIDuwyBnHptEyaweykwCHpipkowGoDBAthjDkHgovFJsljvabpJ/IMG_8375.jpg.thumb100.jpg?content_part=zvvhGuFybbvFmpcyIqgq&#8221; alt=”” width=”100” height=”100” /></div>

<div style=”font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium;”>Now, the true test will be to see if the dye lasts through a wearing.</div>
